The Stanley Compass Plane, patented on September 25th, 1877, was made for shaping and smoothing curved wood surfaces - doors, window frames and furniture, not to mention oak barrels and wagon wheels.
Practice, patience and talent were needed to master this now rare tool. But in the hands of a skilled craftsman, the results could be exceptional.
This explains why Don James, our President, chose the Compass Plane as the perfect symbol for our company - It represents the uncommon craftsmanship and quality upon which we've built our reputation.
