A tool and a symbol.
The Stanley Compass Plane, patented on September 25th, 1877, was made for shaping and smoothing curved wood surfaces - doors, window frames and furniture, not to mention oak barrels and wagon wheels.
Practice, patience and talent were needed to master this now rare tool. But in the hands of a skilled craftsman, the results could be exceptional.
Which explains why Don James, our President, chose the Compass Plane as the perfect symbol for our company.
It represents the uncommon craftsmanship and quality upon which we've built our reputation.
